Founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl, Artek was established with the aim of selling furniture and promoting a modern culture of living through exhibitions and other educational means. The company's name comes from the union of the words "art" and "technology," concepts fundamental to the modernist movement of the 1920s that saw the linking of these two spheres as the innovation of modern design. Its collection consists of furniture, lighting and accessories designed by Finnish and international masters.
Description-
Rival Chair, designed by Konstantin Grcic, represents a new interpretation of the wooden chair. The legs milled from a single piece of birch recall the workings of molded plastic. The swivel function, combined with the padded seat and backrest, which gives support even for long periods of sitting, make it suitable for both domestic environments and office workstations.
